Indie Games from The Game Expo

Hello, welcome.

Over the coming months I will dive into looking at each game and giving more details but for now here is a brief summary of my thoughts on each game that was showcased at The Game Expo.

Footy Bash

AFL and NBA Jam mixed to create a fun footy arcade style game.  Looking forward to playing more.  Focuses more on playability rather than realism.

Dolven

Very cool, turn based rpg with a card game element thrown in.  Reminds me of heroes of might and magic.

Lighthaze World

Laid back, cosy puzzle game with no urgency, love the fact it has drawn inspiration from Tasmanian locations.  If you get stuck on a puzzle it will always be solvable, no need to restart.

Crush Zone Demolition Derby

Robot Wars meets Rocket League, chaotic and fun.  This is the type of game I wish was around when Robot Wars was big.

Spelly Cat

A nice cosy laidback word game, one to get the brain working and puzzles that really go well with the feel of the game.  This is perfect for anyone who likes to keep their brain active.

Drăculești

Stunning visual novel, gripping storytelling… left me emotionally invested in what happens.  Although this game is mostly text based, the graphics add another level to the gameplay.

Servonauts

This is the game where Overcooked meets a space petrol station, love the party game feel to this.  Not much more needs to be said about this one.  There is also a cheeky nod to a well known brand in Australia.

CO2 Catcher

Simple, fun, a reminder that games don’t have to be complicated.  This game can become really challenging and addictive.

Bullcrap!

Breathes new life into a card game, love it.  The added twists make you rethink what you thought you knew about how to play.  Available as both a physical card game and on steam.  This is available now and I look forward to playing with friends.

Which Way Up: Galaxy Games

Fun party games, think mario party minigames.  Explained to me as mario party in space, this felt the case through my time playing, with up to four people being able to play this game seems perfect for a games night.

Pond Scum

A game that brings platforming into the realm of VR.  Love the single point view in VR and reminds me of Croc or Sonic with platform puzzles.  Distinctly Australian.

Foodomina

Gives 8 bit gaming vibes, with a focus on the story.   Take notice at the attention to detail from the names of characters.  There are elements from other games that are weaved into this game and there are nods to games from the past (there are a few moments that took me back to Pokemon on the Gameboy.

Dragon of Saiyu

Reminds me of the NES platformers.  As the developer notes inspired by Megaman and it is good to see this style of games still being made, takes me back to the good old days of gaming.

Matchmaker: Dungeon Heart

Match three mixed with a dating sim, ever wanted to know what happens in dungeons when the heroes aren’t crawling through… this could be it.  Although I am not usually into the match three type of games, this caught my eye with the dungeon dating sim element, I look forward to finding out more.

Polar Pathways

Love this game, you play as a penguin.  Cosy and no urgency to complete tasks.  The ability to go at your own pace and not have any enemies feels like a welcome change.  A nice little game that is more focused on CHILLING than the action.

High School Hills: Dreams & Nightmares

Another adventure game that takes you back to games of the past but with modern feels, story based and something that is sure to excite with gameplay.

Wren’s Resurgence

Hearing the story behind why this game was made really gave a good reminder as to why games are important, it is a creative outlet.  On the actual game, retro platformer feel with a modern take.

Zodiac Mountain

Great concept, great artwork.  Love the way this game plays.  There is more to it than first meets the eye and the way gameplay ties to the inspiration is evident throughout.

Overall, I am genuinely excited to see how the games go and understand that at the end of the day some games might not be my style of game, but I sense there is a good market there for all the games.
